Tool Hook in Toolkit

Block deletion and retrieval of customer ID 123 with a validation tool_hook wrapped around a custom Toolkit.

Show how to use a tool execution hook, to run logic before and after a tool is called.

The customer tools are fixtures: retrieval constructs sample JSON and deletion returns a string without deleting a database record. A hook’s ValueError becomes a failed tool result that the model can respond to. The synchronous example rejects ID 123; the asynchronous example uses allowed ID 456.

Run the Example

Set up your virtual environment

uv venv --python 3.12
source .venv/bin/activate

Install dependencies

uv pip install -U agno openai

Export your OpenAI API key

export OPENAI_API_KEY="your_openai_api_key_here"

Run the example

Save the code above as tool_hook_in_toolkit.py, then run:

python tool_hook_in_toolkit.py
