Use MySQL as the database for an agent

Store agent sessions in MySQL and add history to context across runs.

mysql_for_agent.py
"""Use MySQL as the database for an agent.

Run `uv pip install openai` to install dependencies."""

from agno.agent import Agent
from agno.db.mysql import MySQLDb

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Setup
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
db_url = "mysql+pymysql://ai:ai@localhost:3306/ai"
db = MySQLDb(db_url=db_url)

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Create Agent
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
agent = Agent(
    db=db,
    add_history_to_context=True,
)

# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
# Run Agent
# ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
if __name__ == "__main__":
    agent.print_response("How many people live in Canada?")
    agent.print_response("What is their national anthem called?")

Run the Example

Set up your virtual environment

uv venv --python 3.12
source .venv/bin/activate

Install dependencies

uv pip install -U agno openai pymysql sqlalchemy

Export your OpenAI API key

export OPENAI_API_KEY="your_openai_api_key_here"

Run MySQL

docker run -d --name mysql -e MYSQL_ROOT_PASSWORD=ai -e MYSQL_DATABASE=ai -e MYSQL_USER=ai -e MYSQL_PASSWORD=ai -p 3306:3306 mysql:8

Wait for MySQL

Wait until the application user can connect to the initialized database:

docker exec mysql sh -c 'until mysql -h 127.0.0.1 -uai -pai ai -e "SELECT 1" >/dev/null 2>&1; do sleep 1; done'

Run the example

Save the code above as mysql_for_agent.py, then run:

python mysql_for_agent.py
